# User settings

> Read one user's profile, dashboard and display settings, and their profile image.

User settings hold one user's profile, dashboard and display settings. Here you read a user's settings and their profile image. This area has 2 endpoints, and every SDK supports both.

## At a glance

| Endpoint | Method | Path | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| [Retrieve a user's settings](https://exsited.mintlify.site/api-reference/user-settings/retrieve-a-users-settings.md) | GET | `/user_settings/{user_id}` | Returns one user's settings, under `user_settings`. |
| [Retrieve a user's profile image](https://exsited.mintlify.site/api-reference/user-settings/retrieve-a-users-profile-image.md) | GET | `/user_settings/{user_id}/profile_image` | Returns a user's profile image as base64, under `user_settings`. |

## Before you call

Register your API credentials once when your app starts, as shown in
[Authentication](https://exsited.mintlify.site/authentication.md). Every SDK sample on these pages then gets its client in one line.
With cURL, send the access token in an `Authorization` header: `Authorization: Bearer $ACCESS_TOKEN`.

## Things to know

* **The path takes the user's `usr_` id, not the operator's `op_` id.** The two carry the same hex, so change the prefix from `op_` to `usr_`.
* **There is no listing.** `GET /user_settings` returns `400` with `Invalid ID`. List operators to find the users.
* **Both reads wrap their answer in `user_settings`.** The profile image comes back as `base64`, without a data URI prefix.
* **The profile image is read only.** The API does not serve a write for it to these credentials, so the SDKs have none.
