# Attribute attachments

> Download the file stored in a custom attribute of the file type, as base64 text.

An attribute attachment is the file a custom attribute of the file type holds for an account. This area has 1 endpoint, which returns that file as base64 text, and all seven SDKs call it.

## At a glance

| Endpoint | Method | Path | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| [Retrieve an attribute attachment](https://exsited.mintlify.site/api-reference/attribute-attachments/retrieve-an-attribute-attachment.md) | GET | `/attribute_attachment/{file_uuid}` | Returns the file a custom file attribute holds, as base64 text. |

## Before you call

Register your API credentials once when your app starts, as shown in
[Authentication](https://exsited.mintlify.site/authentication.md). Every SDK sample on these pages then gets its client in one line.
With cURL, send the access token in an `Authorization` header: `Authorization: Bearer $ACCESS_TOKEN`.

## Things to know

* **The path is singular.** Call `/attribute_attachment/{file_uuid}`, not a plural form.
* **The file comes back as a JSON object with one key, `base64`.** The body is `{"base64": "..."}`, so decode the `base64` value to get the file's bytes.
* **Use the uuid the account's file attribute links to.** An account's file attribute points at this path; take the `file_uuid` from there.
* **An unknown uuid returns `404`.** The error code is `resource_not_found`.
